JAMBI FEMALE PADDLERS REACH GRAND FINAL IN DRAGON BOAT RACE

Padang, INDONESIA, Aug 1 (ANTARA) - Some 22 female paddlers of Jambi provincial chapter of the Indonesian Paddlers Association (PODSI) will compete in the grand final of the international dragon boat race here Sunday.

The Jambi's team of the 22 female paddler-class for a distance of 800 meters will fight in the grand final taking place in the flood canal of the H. Agus Salim sports area (GOR) of Padang city, the Jambi's team coach, Ahmad Bahagia Nur said here on Saturday.

In addition, other four classes were still competing in the semifinal round namely the 12 female paddlers class for a distance of 800 meters, 12 male paddlers for 800 meters, 22 mix open paddlers class for 800 meters and 12 mix open paddlers for 800 meters, he said.

"For the 12 male paddlers of 800 meters class, four teams which will compete at the semifinal round on Satuday namely from the PODSI of Sarolangun (Jambi), Medan, Belawan Amphibi, and West Sumatra," he said.

The Jambi's team coach, Ahmad Bahagia Nur expressed hope that his team would be successful in six classes in this year (2009)international dragon boat race, adding that his team had only a short term of preparation.

He, however, expressed a commitment to grab an overall champion this year from the 2008's champion, the Philippines's paddlers team.

The dragon boat race was participated in by teams of five countries namely Taiwan, Malaysia (two teams), Macao, the Philippines (2008 champion), Hong Kong and host Indonesia, dragon boat race coordinator, Eri Barlian said.

The event would last from July 31 to August 2, 2009. ***
