DEFENSE BUDGET STILL FAR FROM IDEAL: MP

Jakarta, Aug 4 (ANTARA) - Although defense budget occupies the second place in the draft 2010 state budget, it is still far from ideal to promote the Indonesian military's capacity, a lawmaker said.

"Of course, we are happy with the second place. But actually the figure is still far from minimum need, much less the ideal need of Rp127 trillion," Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives' Commission for defense Yusron Ihza Mahendra said here on Monday.

In his state-of-the-nation address to introduce the government's financial note and the draft 2010 state budget before the parliament earlier in the day, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said budget allocation for the Defense Ministry in 2010 was projected at Rp40.7 trillion compared to Rp31 trillion in the previous year.

The president said the fairly large budget allocation for the Defense Ministry was particularly designed to safeguard state sovereignty, keep the Unitary Republic of Indonesia intact, and uphold peace and order.

Another member of the House Commission Theo L Sambuaga said he warmly welcomed the significant increase in budget allocations for the defense ministry.

Yusron said the increase in defense budget was particularly triggered by a string of accidents affecting the Indonesia's military armament systems, airplanes in particular.

Therefore, the additional defense budget must be chiefly used to maintain the armament system, he said.***1***
