Medvedev congratulates Obama on birthday.

MOSCOW, August 4 (Itar-Tass) - In a telephone conversation on Tuesday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev congratulated U.S. President Barack Obama on his birthday, the Kremlin press service reported.

Medvedev congratulated Obama on the first birthday he celebrates as
president of the USA. The U.S. leader thanked him for congratulations and
gave high marks to a new quality of summit level contacts that established
during their previous meetings.
Both countries stressed a need for maintaining trust-based relations
between the presidents and their teams. The two presidents also noted that
the practical result of such cooperation was demonstrated at constructive
talks during the Russian-American summit in Moscow and results reached
within its framework, which have made it possible to change the spirit and
style of bilateral cooperation.
In this connection the two presidents exchanged opinions on the course
of implementation of agreements reached at the Moscow summit, and noted,
in particular, a need to launch as soon as possible practical work of the
presidential commission.
As to the dates of working out agreements to replace the START Treaty,
Medvedev and Obama agreed to give additional instructions to experts to
boost work in order to attain the level of meaningful decisions by
December.
They also focused on some pressing international issues, and in
particular, exchanged opinions on lessons of the Georgian crisis one year
ago, on the situation in the Middle East as well as around Iran.
The presidents confirmed mutual bid to continued frank and open
exchange of opinions on all issues of interest to both sides.
Medvedev and Obama also discussed a plan of contacts at different
levels in the near future and in conclusion exchanged warm regards to
families of each other.

.Security Council head to chair visiting session in Perm.

PERM, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - The head of the Russian Security Council,
Nikolai Patrushev, on Wednesday chairs a visiting session of the council
in Perm. All heads of Volga River regions will attend, sources from the
office of the Russian president's envoy to the Volga Federal District told
Tass.
The session will discuss threats to national security in the
implementation of strategic priorities in conditions of the economic
crisis, as well as fight against drug trafficking on the territory of the
Volga Federal District.
"Science, education and technologies are Russia's strategic national
priorities," Patrushev said here on Tuesday.

.GAZ car manufacturer to export minibuses to Iran.

NIZHNY NOVGOROD, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - Russia's GAZ Group car
manufacturer plans to begin exporting its Gazel and Sobol minibuses to
Iran. A contract on the supply of 5,000 minibuses is being currently
coordinated, sales and marketing director Oleg Markov told reporters on
Tuesday.
It is planned to send the first batch already in October, he said.
According to Markov, a company delegation which has just returned from
Iran, said the market of that country is "very broad, and our vehicles are
in big demand there and are competitive".
This is the second contract of GAZ Group with the Iranian state
company IRH, aimed at the development of the passenger transport network
in Iran. The first contract was implemented in 2007-2008.
Markov declined to give the date of the new contract, noting that the
stages of its implementation will be determined proceeding from the final
terms of its signing.

.Nigerian authorities set free Ukrainian plane and its crew.

PARIS, August 5 (Itar-Tass) - The Nigerian authorities set free on
Tuesday a Ukrainian plane and its crew, arrested in June when the plane
was airlifting a batch of weapons to Equatorial Guinea, military sources
in Nigeria reported.
The plane, arrested on June 17, was carrying a major batch of mines
and ammunition. It had seven crew on board. The plane landed in Nigeria
for technical reasons, because of malfunctioning equipment.
According to the Nigerian authorities, the plane took off on Tuesday
from the airport of the city of Kano. The Nigerian secret services
questioned the crew during the arrest.
