PAKISTAN, INDONESIA NEED TO FOCUS ON ECONOMIC COOP : MINISTER

Jakarta, Aug 5 (ANTARA) - Pakistan has been enjoying all-round cooperative relationships with Indonesia but there is a need to focus on economic cooperation, a Pakistani minister said.

The two countries need to increase their cooperation in the economic field in particular, Pakistani Housing and Works Minister Rehmatullah Kakar said here on Wednesday, according to the Pakitsani embassy.
On the issue of bilateral trade, the Charge d' Affairs, Mirza Salman Babar Beg added that Pakistan was actively pursuing the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Indonesia which would boost their bilateral trade which had already reached a value of US$1 billion.

Kakar is in Jakarta to represent Pakistan at the 4th Meeting of the 2nd Bureau of the Asia Pacific Ministerial Conference on Housing and Urban Development (APMCHUD) which is to take place August 6-7, 2009.

He said Pakistan intended to benefit from the experience of other countries in the field of housing by participating in the 4th meeting of the APMCHUD.

The Pakistan government, he said, had launched housing programmes covering different segments of the society so that people in general would greatly benefit from the schemes.

Briefing the media on the situation in the Swat valley, he said, by the grace of the Almighty, security operations in the troubled region had been a tremendous success and thousands of displaced people had now returned to their homes and hearths. Conditions in the region were now returning g to complete normalcy.
He also said Pakistan`s economy was facing the same challenges from the global economic crisis as any other country. But he added that with effective planning and show of resilience, Pakistan would be able to overcome the economic difficulties.

The 4th Meeting of the 2nd Bureau of APMCHUD, besides deliberating on important matters, would also discuss proceedings of the 3rd Meeting and review action report on the decisions taken during the meeting.

The Proposed Structure of the Permanent Secretariat of APMCHUD and preparations for the organization of the third Ministerial Conference in Solo, Indonesia, would also be discussed.

APMCHUD aims to address the challenges of urbanization, housing and habitat management, millennium development goals, urban poverty and slum development.

It endeavours to develop strategies and policies for habitat development in which land and housing are considered to be key components. It also had the objective of sharing and exchanging knowledge on land and housing, national and city strategies for poverty alleviation to enable Asia Pacific countries to speak with one voice at regional and international fora.***2***
