MINISTER: GOVT TO CONTINUE POVERTY REDUCTION PROGRAMS

Banjarnegara, Indonesia, Aug 6 (ANTARA) - The government will continue to reduce the country's poverty rate through various programs, Social Services Minister Bachtiar Chamsyah said here on Thursday.

"The biggest problem of our nation is how to reduce poverty," the minister said when presenting housing renovation assistance to the heads of 200 families in Banjarnegara, Central Java, on Thursday.

Bachtiar said the government programs to reduce the poverty rate in the country were among others Direct Cash Assistance (BLT), School Operational Assistance (BOS), people's empowerment improvement assistance, and business credit assistance.

He said business credit assistance from state banks until the end of this year was predicted to reach Rp20 trillion.

The minister said the government's poverty alleviating programs had already resulted in a lowering of the national poverty rate.

"The programs have reduced the number of poor people from 37 million in 2006 to 36 million in 2007 and 35 million in 2008, and at the end of this year the figure is expected to drop to 32 million," Bachtiar said.

But he added that the problem of poverty would be overcome by hard work, while the government would only give stimuli.

Bachtiar said the Social Services Department with its two sources of funds, namely the state budget (APBN) and assistance from people in the form of social welfare business, would make every possible effort to reduce the poverty rate.

He said , one of the assistance programs managed by the Social Services Department was the disbursement of funds for the renovation of poor people's houses in Banjarnegara.

The same assistance would also be given to poor people in all of the country's districts.***
