POLICE STILL UNABLE TO CONFIRM DEAD SUSPECT IS NOORDIN
Jakarta, Aug 8 (ANTARA) - National Police Chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said the police could not yet confirm that the person killed during a raid in Central Java on Saturday was Noordin M Top.
In a press conference at the National Police Headquarters on Saturday afternoon he said police still had to wait for the results of DNA tests to establish the dead teror suspect's identity.
"Right now we dare not say who he is pending a scientific study. There must be a DNA test," he said.
Therefore he called on all parties who felt they had family relationship with the person to immediately come to the police to have their DNA samples taken to compare with his.
"Only after the results of the DNA test are available can we be sure who he is and it will possibly be next week that we will know his identity," he said.
He said the police would make his identity known to the public after they had scientific facts to confirm it.
When asked if the physical characteristics of the dead person were similar to those of suspected terrorist matermind Noordin M Top, Danuri declined to answer but asked for patience until scientific proof was obtained
"I will not make assumptions in this case," he said.
Earlier, the police raided a house belonging to Muhzjuri in the village of Beji in Temanggung, Central Java, believed to be the hiding place of Noordin M Top.
After a 17-hour siege and several exchanges of fire, the police finally hit the suspect entrenched in the house fatally at around 9.20am on Saturday.
The body of the terror suspect was now kept at the Soekanto Police Hospital in Kramatjati, East Jakarta, for identification and an autopsy.
On the occasion Danuri explained the chronology of events leading to the raid in Temanggung.
He said after the bombings at JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotels on July 17, the police immediately moved fast without media attention and publicity to prevent the suspects to run from their hiding places.
He said with the silence so far it did not mean that the police did not work but they had even worked hard without fatigue.
From witnesses and evidences the police finally discovered a location in Kuningan, West Java, that had been used as a place to plan the bombings.
They once lived in one of the rented houses in Mampang, South Jakarta.
Finally the police could determine the suicide bombers on August 3, namely Dani Dwi Permana from Bogor, West Java, and Nana Ikhwan Maulana from Pandeglang.
Dana was the suicide bomber at JW Marriott and Nana the one at the Ritz-Carlton.
Danuri said on August 5, the police arrested Amir Ibrahim who had booked room 1808 at the JW Marriott.
"Until after we arrested Ibrahim we did not make any publicity because if we did it would finish there," he said.
He said the police had also arrested Yayan in North Jakarta who had been recruited as candidate suicide bomber. From the suspects who had been arrested the police found a house at Puri Nusapala estate Block D in Jatiasih, Bekasi, Banten, West Java, that had been used as a place to plan bombings as well as to keep explosive materials.
On August 7, the police killed two persons in the house who had threatened to throw a grenade when the police tried to arrest them.
Another police team meanwhile arrested three persons in Temanggung for allegedly hiding a wanted terrorist suspect namely Munzjuhri, Aris and Indra.
From them the police discovered that the wanted terrorist suspect was in Munzjuhri's house.
Based on the information the police then conducted the raid on the house and received resistence leading to gun batlles. Only on Saturday morning were the police able to confirm that only one person was in the house and based on it the police directed several barrages of gunfire at the house which eventually fatally hit the suspect.
