TERROR BIGWIGS` ELIMINATION NOT TO END RADICALISM : OBSERVER
Surabaya, Indonesia, Aug 10 (ANTARA) - The elimination of some terror big wigs does not spell the end of radicalism in Indonesia as long as certain underlying conditions in society persist, an observer said.
"Terrorist acts will not stop as long as three underlying conditions in society continue to exist," Ahmad Zainuri, an observer of terrorism at Sidoarjo Muhammadiyah University, said here on Monday.
He said the flourishing radicalism in the country was caused by three main conditions, namely "injustices, repressive exploitation, and slander."
Based on his observation from the education, social, and economic perspectives, Ahmad Zainuri said, the acts of terrorism in Indonesia were triggered by economic injustices.
Therefore, he said, people with such an economic and social background were easily influenced and indoctrinated by hardliners like Noordin Muhammad Top, a Malaysian extremist wanted for masterminding multiple suicide bombings in Indonesia dating back to 2003.
Zainuri concluded that so long as injustices and poverty remained getting out of hand, radicalism in the form of terror would continue to happen.
Meanwhile, senior anti-terror official Ansyaad Mbai said
even through terror mastermind Noordin M Top was reportedly shot dead during a raid in Temanggung, Central Java, on Saturday, his group would continue to kill innocent people in the name of Islam.
"His presence in Indonesia for such a long time with a series of terrorist actions carried out up to July 2009, shows that Noordin has continued to build up his power base in the form of cells," Ansyaad said.
In a violent raid on Saturday by the Special Detachment 88 of the Indonesian Police force on Noordin's hideout in Tembanggung, Central Java, Noodin was believed to have been killed, but Ansyaad said the death of the Malaysian extremist would not cripple his network he had worked hard to build, finance and train.***
