TNI INTENSIFYING ANTICIPATIVE MEASURES AGAINST TERRORISM

Jakarta, Aug 11 (ANTARA) - National Defense Forces (TNI) Chief Gen Djoko Santoso said the TNI would continue to intensify its anticipative measures against terrorism.

The TNI chief made the statement after conferring a Bintang Yudha Dharma Utama medal on Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono at the TNI Headquarters in Cilangkap, East Jakarta, on Tuessday.

Santoso said the anticipative measures against terrorism were taken following the raids on several terrorist dens in Jakarta, Bekasi, and Temanggung in Central Java last week.

"The TNI has adopted three strategies to fight terrorism, namely early detection, preventive measures, and action," Djoko Santoso said.

He added early detection efforts would be made through territorial units who were responsible for providing early information for the TNI to analyze.

"For preventive measures, the TNI already has anti-terror units at every regional military command to collect informations and to study them before reporting it to the coordinating ministry of political, legal and security affairs (Polhukam)," Santoso said.

In addition, he said, through the territorial management units, the TNI was also informing people about what terrorism was all about and ways of facing it.

"All anticipative measures are stipulated in the military law No.34/2004 on military operations besides war," Santoso said.

Meanwhile, Diponegoro Military Commander Maj Gen Haryadi Sotanto said the security situation in Central Java was relatively conducive after the raid on a house believed to be the hideout of fugitive terror suspect Nurdin Muhammad Top in Temanggung on Saturday.

"The situation is conducive and everything is running as usual, although we have to remain alert," Haryadi said, adding that he continued to coordinate with the local police to anticipate the possibility of more terror threats.
