INDONESIAN FORESTRY COY NEEDS PERMIT FOR TREE FELLING ACTIVITIES
Madiun, Aug 12 (ANTARA) - State forestry company Perhutani needs a permit from the regional administration concerned for tree felling operations.
The statement was made by East Java Governor Soekarwo in Saradan, Madiun regency Wednesday.
"This is one way of controlling indiscriminate tree felling activities so that the age of trees which would be cut would be longer than the reforestation process. The balance of forests needs to be maintained as forests have economic potentials, for which the participation of all concerned would be necessary," he said.
He said that actually there was already a regulation on the matter.
He said the forests have a great deal of important elements for life including their ecosystem, water resources, and other natural balances. Therefore the forests need to be protected from any danger, including illegal logging and fires.
On the occasion, the governor also told all concerned, both perhutani, regional administrations, and forest border residents, to take part in preventing forest damage.
"Perhutani has also been urged to accommodate forest boder residents to take part in forest preservation," he said.
It is worth noting that the forested land in East Java covered a total of 28 percent of the East Java province, or 1,363,719 hectares.
Some 27,868 ha of the forested land were managed by the East Java provincial forestry service, 29,263 ha by the Natural Resources Conservation Institute (BBKSDA), 176,696 ha by national parks, and more than 1,127,609 ha by Perhutani Unit II, of East Java.
