SOETOMO HOSPITAL TO SEPARATE ANOTHER SIAMESE TWIN
Surabaya, Indonesia, Aug 12 (ANTARA) - After successfully separating the Janeta-Janetra twin, dr. Soetomo hospital in Surabaya planned another siamese twin separation surgery, this time on the Rosida-Rosita twin.
The operation on the siamese twin hailing from Bontang, East Kalimantan, will be conducted on Thursday (Aug 13), under a cooperation between dr. Soetomo hospital and Surabaya Internasional Hospital.
dr. Agus Harianto, spokesman for the team of doctors of dr Soetomo Hospital's Integrated Siamese Twin Service Center, said on Wednesday since May 2009 the Rosida-Rosita twin had been referred to the Surabaya Internasional Hospital because their bodies suddenly turned bluish.
"During their treatment at the Surabaya Internasional Hospital, the two baby girls had breathing difficulties three times, and had to use respirators," he said.
"This week would be the best time for the operation, and further delays would only worsen their condition," he said.
It has been estimated that the operation would last about 15 hours involving 50 doctors, many of them with special and specific surgical expertise.
In the meantime, member of the team of doctors Prof. dr. Syaifuddin Noer, Sp.BA, said the risk and difficulties of the operation on the Rosida-Rosita twin are higher than those of the Janeta-Janetra twin, including the absence of a tissue expander which was used on the Janeta-Janetra twin.
"The absence of a tissue expander would make it very difficult to close the wounds following the separation," he said, adding that it would take several months to instal a tissue expander.
In addition, the Rosida-Rosita twin is six month younger than the Janeta-Janetra twin when it was operated on July 23, when they were already 13 months old.
