MEGAWATI, PRABOWO UNDERSTAND COURT'S RULING ON ELECTION RESULTS

Jakarta, Aug 12 (ANTARA) - The Megawati Soekarnoputri-Prabowo ticket said they understood the constitutional court's ruling over the results of the presidential election on July 8.

"Although the court's decision is not in line with our expectation we hereby state we understand it with some notes," Megawati said to newsmen at her residence on Jalan Teuku Umar, on Wednesday evening.

The court earlier denied the demands of the Megawati-Prabowo ticket and Jusuf Kalla-Wiranto ticket stating that the arguments for their demand such as problems of fictitous voters' lists, re-grouping of polling stations and involvement of a foreign institution in national vote tabulation were not legally proven.

Megawati was flanked by Prabowo, the secretary general of her Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP) and the chief of her lawyers' team, Gayus Lumbuun, at the press conference.

She said the position of the constitutional court was very important serving as the last resort for struggles to develop a better democracy in the country.

She said there were problems in the presidential election that ran against development of democracy such as keeping citizens' names off the fixed voters' list (DPT), closing more than 69,000 polling stations, indications of involvement of state officials as well as foreign institutions in the election process and other massive and systemic irregularities.

Megawati and Prabowo hoped there would not be instrumentalization of law in the court's ruling to prove that the court was one of the independent legislative branches that were able to escort better implementation of democracy and statehood in the future.

On the occasion Megawati thanked her lawyers, supporters, pioneers and all the people of Indonesia who had taken all efforts to build democracy in the country.

Megawati and Prabowo did not accept questions.

After the court read the verdict around a hundred of supporters of Megawati-Prabowo moved from the court's compound to Megawati's residence expressing their disappointment over the ruling along the way.

After arriving at her residence they conducted a sit-in before the house thus occupying one of the lanes. Some of them chanted "Long Live Mega-Pro".
