DPR GUARDS POLITICAL REFORM

Jakarta, Aug 14 (ANTARA) - The House of Representatives (DPR) has made every effort to guard political reform in the past five years, House Speaker Agung Laksono said at Parliament building here on Friday.

He said political reform is inseparable from legal, social, and economic reforms.

"Everything can run well because the House has made every effort to guard it," Laksono said, adding that the DPR for the 2004-2009 period did its best on the basis of 1945 Constitution which has undergone four revisions after the reform period in 1998.

Laksono said the DPR has guarded the political reform since the past five years and would continue to do so because it was inseparable from legal, social, and economic reforms.

"The political, legal, social, and economic reforms should run together toward a democratic society in accordance with the preamble of the 1945 Constitution," Laksono said.

But he admitted that the DPR still had a lot of homework to do and implement.

He said one of the major challenges facing the DPR was how to build a better parliamentary system, culture, and tradition that the people want.

"Therefore the DPR will continue to strengthen common understanding by respecting the differences and try to find a solution through internal as well as external dialogs in consultative forums," Laksono said.
