SONY FAILS TO PASS WORLD BADMINTAN SEMI-FINALS

Hyderabad, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - Indonesia failed to field its men's single players in the finals of the World Badminton Championship here after Sony was defeated by Lin Dan from China on Saturday.

Sony Dwi Kuncoro was beaten in three sets in 63 minutes, 14-21, 21-13, 15-21, by the Chinese.

With the result the men's single title is confirmed to go to China as Chen Jin from China also defeated Indonesian Taufik Hidayat, 21-16, 21-6, the semi-finals.

"This is the maximal performance I could achieve. Meeting Lin Dan is not an easy job as he is smart and good at controlling tempo," Sony said after the match. Sony was also beaten by Lin Dan in the finals of the 2007 world championship in Malaysia.

"Actually I could match Lin Dan but just prior to the end of the third set I lost my concentration and often made a blunder," he said.

The 2008 Indonesian Super Series champion said meeting a player of a calibre of Lin Dan did not only need patience but also deadly weapons.

Sony played them and successfully curbed Lin Dan's agressiveness.

In the third set the match went tough making the two to play to a 5-5 draw. But afterwards Lin Dan led 8-6 and then 11-8 and since then his progress could not be stopped until the end of the game.

Lin Dan, asked to confirm by newsmen, said he was quite surprised to see Dwi's improving performance. "He is more mature and his strokes were often difficult to cope with. I was under pressure in the second set but I could overcome it in the third set," the 2006 and 2007 world champion said.

The 2008 Olympic champion is ambitious to win the third world champion title to make a record as the first men's single player to win the title three times in a row. ***
