NOVA/NATSIR PROCEED TO WORLD BADMINTON FINALS
Hyderabad, Aug 15 (ANTARA) - Indonesian mixed-double pair Nova Widianto/Liliana Natsir managed to proceed to the final round at the World Badminton Championship in Hyderabad, India, on Saturday.
The second-seeded and 2007 champion pair was able to reach the finals after fighting for an hour to beat Danish pair Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Christinna Pedersen in a rubber set 21-18, 14-21, 21-18.
They would meet a Danish pair again in the finals namely Thomas Laybourn/Kamilla Rytter Juhl. This seventh-seeded pair gave a big surprise after beating the first-seeded and Olympic champion Lee Yong Dae/Lee Hyo Jung from South Korea, 18-21,21-19, 21-18 earlier.
"We were a bit nervous in the third set, but luckily our opponents seemed to feel the same way. So, we were not depressed too much when the score was 17-17," Nova said after the match with the Danish pair.
Liliyana admitted the Danish pair had speed and sharp smashes. "Moreover the man player (Joachim Fischer) could move swiftly and therefore we tried maximally not to make any mistake," she said.
"Hopefully we can play better in the final because our opponents are also hard to beat," Nova said.
Kamilla Rytter Juhl meanwhile admitted they did not believe they could beat the world number one and the most favourite to become a champion in the arena.
"It was a surprise. They are a strong and solid pair. We are glad we could beat them. We could do it because we kept pressuring from the start," she said.
Joachim Fischer admitted Nova/Liliyana were as hard to beat as the pair they defeated before. However "we will have nothing to lose because we have set no target from the beginning. But as we are already in the final we will certainly wish to grab the title," he said.***
