SOME 2,827 DIVERS JOIN UNDERWATER FLAG HOISTING CEREMONY
Manado, Indonesia, Aug 17 (ANTARA) - A total of 2,827 divers participated in the underwater Red-and-White flag hoisting ceremony to mark the 64th anniversary of Indonesian independence here Monday.
"The underwater flag hoisting event taking place at the
Malalayang Beach is also participated in by seven high-ranking officials," head of the Navy information division, Commodore Iskandar Sitompul said here on Monday.
Some 76 participants of the total number of divers were foreigners, Sitompul said, adding that Navy deputy chief of staff, Vice Admiral Moekhlas Sidik acted as master of ceremony.
The underwater flag hoisting ceremony took place coinciding with the on-going Sail Bunaken festival,Aug 12-20, 2009.
In addition to the thousands of the divers, at least 28 warships and 163 yachts from 14 countries participated in the Sail Bunaken festival.
The annual Red-and-White flag hoisting ceremonies took place across the country in different ways, even in penitentiaries. ***
