EARTHQUAKE JOLTS ACEH EARLY TUESDAY


Bandarlampung, Aug. 18 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale jolted Aceh Province here early Tuesday at 10.26 am Western Indonesian Standard Time (WIB).

The temblor's epicenter was located at 2.65 degrees northern latitude, 96.34 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, around 19 km Northwest of Sinabang, Nangroe Aceh, the national meteorological and geophysics office reported on Tuesday.

Another earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale rocked Ternate, North Maluku Province, on Tuesday at 8.31 am WIB.

The tremor's epicenter was located at 1.93 degrees northern latitude, 127.31 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, about 127 km Northwest of Ternate.

Earlier, at 1.26 am WIB also on Tuesday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Papua Province, Indonesia's eastern most province.

Its epicenter was located at 3.11 degrees southern latitude and 135.71 degrees eastern longitude, about 37 km Northeast of Nabire, Papua.

Last Sunday (Aug. 16), a strong earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale hit West Sumatra province at 2.38 pm.

The epicenter of the quake was at 1.64 degrees south latitude and -99.12 degrees east longitude at a depth of 32 km, some 43 km south east of Siberut, Mantawai, West Sumatra.
