BADMINTON: TAUFIK FORGETS WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, AND GOES TO MACAU INSTEAD

Jakarta, Aug 18 (ANTARA) - Fourth world ranking badminton ace Taufik Hidayat of Indonesia reached a victory when opening the Grand Prix Gold Macau Open on Tuesday after he was stopped in the world championship semifinals.

Taufik a third seed, won 21-19, 21-15 against Macau shuttler Chan Io Chong, and would have to face Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand who had beaten India's Ajay Jayaram 21-13, 21-17.

Although saying he was rather tired, Taufik said he has to appear in Macau to meet an invitation of the organizers.

In the meantime, Taufik who lost in the world championship semifinals in Hyderabad, India, last week when beaten by Chen Jin of China, did not set a particular target.

"I will only try my best," said the 2005 champion and gold medalist at the Olympics in Athens in 2004.

Chong Wei also booked a first victory.

Chong Wei's hope to become world champion disappeared into thin air after beaten by Indonesia's ace Sony Dwi Kuncoro in the quarterfinals, but won against Chiang Jiann Shiarng 21-9, 21-6.

In the meantime, several Indonesian national players failed to enter the main stage after being beaten in the qualification round.

Mix doubles Wifki Windarto and Anneke Feinya Agustine were beaten by China's Qiu Zihan and Zhing Qianxin 11-21, 17-21 in the second stage of the qualification round, while Lingga Lie and Kesya Nurvita Hanadia gave up to Taiwan Liao Min Chun and Cheng Hsiao Huan 21-16, 19-21, 12-21 in the third stage of the qualification round.

Likewise, women's singles player Aprilia Yuswandari and women's doubles Komala Dewi and Kesya Nurvita Hanadia were also beaten in the second stage of the qualification round.
Aprilia was beaten by Taiwan's Taiwan Hsu Ya Ching 19-21, 19-21, and Komala Dewi and Kesya failed to beat China's doubles Xie Jing and Zhong Qianxin who won 14-21, 21-15, 21-9.
