INDONESIAN GOVT TO PRIORITIZE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT OUTSIDE JAVA: PRESIDENT

Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the government would give priority to infrastructure development outside Java so that national development would be equitably distributed to all regions.

"The island of Java has the most equitably distributed economic activities due to a more evenly dispersed and advanced infrastructure development in comparison to other islands," the president said in his address at a special plenary session of the f Regional Representatives Council (DPD) here on Wednesday.

He said over the past four years, development had spread more equitably over all regions as indicated by the Equity Index of the Gross Regional Domestic Product (PDRB).

The Equity Index that was 0.61 in 2005 has gone done to 0.55 in 2008, the president told the DPD session.

Yudhoyono said the figure showed that inter-regional economic activities had become more balanced.

"The Island of Java has the most equitably distributed economic activities due to more evenly dispersed and advanced infrastructure development. Therefore, the government is resolved to accelerate and give priority to the execution of infrastructure development in all provinces and islands outside Java," the head of state said.

On the occasion, the president also pointed out that it had chosen the appropriate economic development strategy in the past five years by focusing on agriculture revitalization, food and energy security establishment and basic and strategic infrastructure development.

"We must pursue the journey to develop the Indonesian nation in materializing the ideals of independence in sustainable manner. We must become more capable to seize the various opportunities and respond to every challenge through effective development programs," he said.***1***
