PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO CALLS FOR DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL
Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has stressed on "Development for All" in his last address for the 2004-2009 term of office.
The president made the emphasis in his state-of-the-nation address on national development to regional perspectives in a special plenary session of the Regional Representatives of Council (DPD) here on Wednesday.
Commenting on the Development for All, the president said every citizen was equal before the law and the government because the state did not make any distinction.
"For this reason, therefore, the state must see to it that there are no groups of people who are ignored in the development process," the head of state said.
The president in his address invited all parties to conduct a reflection on the journey of the national development during the past 64 years as an independent Indonesia, especially during the past 5 years.
Yudhoyono said that his address on Wednesday was his last for the 2004-2009 term of office until October 20, the government he led with Vice President Jusuf Kalla would come to an end and a new government would start its mandate for the next 5-year period.
"Therefore, I would like to invite all of you to see the vision and forward steps of the Indonesian nation in moving towards a just, peaceful, democratic, and flourishing country," the president said.
He admitted that substantial achievements had been, despite the equally many challenges confronting the nation.
The president said the development of the nation should reach and uplift of the dignity of all the layers of the society throughout the country.
"We must advance and prosper collectively and not advance and prosper individually," the head of state said.
He added that when the strength of a nation was likened to a chain, its strength lies in the weakest link.
"Therefore the strategy of Development for All is aimed at strengthening each link of the nation's overall chain of unity and prosperity," the president said.
