GOVT TO CONTINUE INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT: PRESIDENT

Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the Indonesian government was giving great attention to development of infrastructures all over the country in an effort to improve the people's equitable welfare and quality of life.

"The people's equitable welfare and quality of life is greatly determined by availability and the construction of a number of basic infrastructures," the president said in his state-of-the nation address at a special plenary session of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) here on Wednesday.

The president said that it was important for the country to develop infrastructures in the form of highways, irrigation, sea ports, airports, clean water provision, telecommunication, energy and power infrastructures.

He said that particularly for telecommunication, it was expected to that in 2010 all villages and sub-districts would be connected to informatics, namely telephone and internet.

In the same year, all border areas in the country are also expected to be able to receive broadcasts from state-owned TVRI and Radio RRI.

He said that infrastructure development throughout the homeland is the concrete manifestation of the nation's collective determination to build Indonesia's cohesion.

In densely populated areas such as Jakarta, Mass Rapid Transit System project is carried out to ease traffic congestion.

Yudhoyono said that in order to speed up the supply of drinking water, the government also adopted a strategic policy by providing collateral and interest subsidy to regional water company (PDAM).

"This program is introduced to realize one of the efforts to realize the millennium development goals (MDG) in the form of lowering a half proportion of the population who have no access to drinking water supply in 2015," the president said.

In the electricity sector, he said, the government has launched the second 10 thousands mega watts power generation program in an effort to anticipate the growing high economic growth.***1***
