INDONESIA'S PROVINCE OF YOGYAKARTA JOLTED BY 4.2 EARTHQUAKE

Yogyakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale jolted Yogyakarta at 9:05 on Wednesday morning, local meteorology and geophysics agency spokesman Bambang Subadyo said.

He said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 8.4 degrees southern latitude and 110.45 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 10 km under the sea level, or about 28 kilometers southeast of Yogyakarta.

But there was no immediate report of casualty or material damage caused by the earthquake.

Therefore, Bambang called on the local people to stay calm because the tremor was just a natural phenomenon and had nothing to do with the most powerful one with more than 4,000 fatalities in May 2006.

On May 27, 2006 a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, centered on Bantul district, struck Yogyakarta and its vicinity and injured thousands of people.

It also triggered fear that a nearby rumbling Mt Merapi volcano would erupt and caused serious damage to the world-famous 9th century Prambanan temple.

The worst devastation was in the town of Bantul, where more than 2,400 people were killed and 80 percent of the homes were flattened, forcing thousands of people to spend the night in open space available.
Earlier on Tuesday morning an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale also jolted Aceh Province.

The temblor's epicenter was located at 2.65 degrees northern latitude, 96.34 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, around 19 km Northwest of Sinabang, Nangroe Aceh, the national meteorological and geophysics office reported.

Another earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale also rocked Ternate, North Maluku Province, on the same day 8.31 am local time.

The tremor's epicenter was located at 1.93 degrees northern latitude, 127.31 degrees eastern longitude, at a depth of 10 km below sea level, about 127 km Northwest of Ternate.

Earlier, at 1.26 am also on Tuesday, a 5.2-magnitude earthquake shook Papua Province in the Indonesia's eastern most province.

Its epicenter was located at 3.11 degrees southern latitude and 135.71 degrees eastern longitude, about 37 km Northeast of Nabire, Papua.
