MAGNITUDE 5.3 EARTHQUAKE RATTLES WEST SUMATRA

Bandarlampung, Indonesia, 19/8 (ANTARA) - A tectonic earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale jolted Siberut, Mentawai islands off the West Sumatra coast at 08.15 am local time on Wednesday.

The epicenter was located at 1.36 degrees southern latitude, 16 degrees eastern longitude and about 75 km west of Siberut, Mentawai islands.

The Climatology, Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in Bandarlampung on Wednesday reported the epicenter lay at a depth of 10 km below sea level and did have the potential to trigger tsunami.

In the meantime, another earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 SR was also reported to have stricken Tanahbala in North Sumatra at about 00:50 am local time on Wednesday.

The epicenter of the quake was located at 0.99 degrees southern longitute and 97.84 eastern latitude and about 87 km southwest of Tanahbala. ***3***
