RI EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES ON KIM DAE-JUNG'S DEMISE
Jakarta, Aug 19 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government and people expressed deep condolences to the South Korean government and people over the death on Tuesday of former president Kim Dae-Jung.
"The government and people of Indonesia appreciate the role he played in and the contribution he made to the promotion of bilateral relations between Indonesia and South Korea," Indonesian foreign ministry spokesman Teuku Faizasyah said here on Wednesday.
Faizasyah said Kim Dae-Jung would be remembered for his efforts in promoting democracy in his country and in creating peace in the East Asian region, particularly in Korea.
"The Nobel peace prize that he received in 2000 is proof of the international community's recognition of his efforts and hard work," he said.
Kim Dae-Jung passed away on August 18, 2009 at the age of 83. He was known worldwide as a great South Korean figure in the struggle to promote democracy.
He also won international appreciation for his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-Il in Pyongyang in 2000.
The meeting revived the relationship between the two countries which had technically remained on a war footing as a consequence of their conflict in 1950-1953 which had ended only on the bais of a cease-fire. ***5***
