Russia, Mongolia presidents visit site of joint military exercise
ULAN BATOR, August 26 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Dmitry Medvedev
and Mongolian President Tsahiagiyn Elbegdorj on Wednesday visited the site
of the joint military exercise Darkhan-2 near Ulan Bator.
Representatives of the Russian and the Mongolian armed forces posted
the leaders of the two states on the progress of the exercise. Vladimir
Gorodnichy, the chief of the exercise from the Russian side, said the
armed forces are represented by the 78th separate repair and restoration
battalion of the Siberian military district organized on July 1, 2000 in
accordance with the Russian armed forces' reform.
Gorodnichy said that taking part in the exercise from the Russian side
are 232 servicemen, and 83 units of armaments and equipment are used.
He said the exercise is aimed to bring the repair forces into top
combat preparedness.
The Russian repair and reconstruction brigade will give technical
assistance in the restoration of faulty armaments and military equipment
of units of the Mongolian armed forces allocated for the peacekeeping
contingent.
Gorodnichy said that during the main stage of the exercise that is to
last from August 18 to September 12 it is planned to repair 526 units of
armaments and military equipment, while as many as 68 units have already
been repaired.
The chief of the exercise noted that the repair battalion can restore
40 units of faulty armaments a day. He said it must take the battalion up
to one hour in summer and an hour and a half in winter to reach the area
of the exercise.
On September 13 the battalion is to leave for the area of its
permanent deployment while the exercise is to last till September 15.
After the report, the Russian military presented the Mongolian
president with a model of a tank made by repairmen of the Siberian
military district. The Russian leader was presented wilt a model of an
armoured personnel carrier.
The Mongolian servicemen, in their turn, presented the presidents with
statuettes of Mongolian cavalrymen clad in national costumes.
