S Korea seeks to develop infrastructure in F East region-Ishayev

SEOUL, August 28 (Itar-Tass) - "The Republic of Korea is very much
interested in issues of the development of infrastructure in our region,"
Russian president's plenipotentiary in the Far Eastern federal district
Viktor Ishayev told Itar-Tass in an exclusive interview here on Friday.
He said that at talks with the South Korean president and foreign
minister he discussed projects for the construction of natural gas
liquefaction plants in the Far East, as well as laying pipelines to China
and to the Korean Peninsula.
"The Koreans intend to take an active part in the development of the
South Kamchatka field, they are interested in the development of fields
and building of gas pipelines. An agreement on the construction of the
Trans-Korean railway that is to be connected to the Trans-Siberian railway
(TransSib) has been recently signed. It is very important not only in the
economic, but also in the political sense, because in this case we talk
about the trilateral cooperation of Russia, South Korea and North Korea.
It is very important in the current situation," the presidential envoy
stressed.
"Seoul is very much interested in the situation with coal deposits,
prospects for the development of which exist in Sakhalin, and the recovery
of high-caloric coals in Yakutia (Ikhtinskoye deposit). As is known, the
SUEK energy company has built at the Vanino port a terminal for 12 million
tonnes of coal handling. On the Ikhtinskoye deposit that has been recently
repurchased by the Mechel company, a protocol of intent with the Hyundai
company has been signed in Seoul for the joint development and
exploitation," Ishayev noted. He said that the Korean side will also build
at Vanino port a terminal with the capacity of 20-22 million tonnes of
coal.
"Both the South Korean president and foreign minister were interested
in the participation of South Korean companies in the development of South
Kamchatka natural fields. Because the Koreans had concluded a contract
with Rosneft that passed the contract to Gazprom that now should start the
work all over again. The Korean side says this is wrong and that we should
be the legal successors. In a word, they have questions. If the South
Korean president and foreign minister raise these questions then the
problem deserves attention," Viktor Ishayev noted.
