Suicide bomber activates carbomb, five wounded.

MAKHACHKALA, September 1 (Itar-Tass) - A suicide bomber has activated a carbomb near a traffic police post here on Tuesday.

An official in the press service of the Dagestan Ministry of the
Interior has told Itar-Tass, "A car of the so far unidentified make was
riding into Makhachkala and was stopped by police for an inspection of
papers".
According to the source, a powerful explosion occurred when policemen
were approaching the car. Four policemen and a civilian car driver riding
nearby received wounds of various degree of gravity. A big crater was
formed by the explosion. Part of the building that houses a stationary
traffic police post was destroyed.
Explosives experts and a field investigation team of the Interior
Ministry, the Federal Security Service, and the prosecutor's office
remains at work at the scene of the incident.

MAKHACHKALA, September 1 (Itar-Tass) - A big terrorist act, which
terrorists prepared for September 1, the Day of Knowledge, has been
thwarted, Ali Magomedov, Dagestan Minister of the Interior, told
journalists on Tuesday.
The Interior Minister said, "When traffic police stopped a car tor an
inspecitonof papers, a suicide bomber activated an explosive device.
Thereby a big terrorist act, which terrorists were planning to stage at a
point in the city today, on the Day of Knowledge, was thwarted".
The explosion wounded four traffic policemen. They are currently at
the republican orthopaedic traumatology center. Yet another person, a
civilian motorist who was riding past in a car, has been also hospitalised.
A crater, 1.5 metres deep and about three metres wide, was formed by
the explosion. Experts are busy establishing the make of the exploded car,
the fragments of which scattered within a radius of up to 100 metres. A
field investigation team is at work at the scene of the incident.
