Food prices show a drop during the second week of Ramadan

Abu Dhabi, Sept 7, 2009 (WAM) - The prices of food commodities during the second week of Ramadan fall 0.60% as compared to the first week of the month.
The Statistics Centre - Abu Dhabi (SCAD) on Sunday issued an analysis of its Foodstuffs Price Index for the second week of the month of Ramadan showing a drop in the prices of certain items in various sub-groups which were: the prices of bread and cereals edged down by 0.17%, fish and seafood by 5.05%, pulses by 2.42%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 0.24%, coffee, tea '&' cocoa by 0.52%, On the other hand the price of meat rose 0.24%, milk, cheese and eggs 0.35%, oils and fats 0.01%, fruits 0.67% and other items 0.02%, while the prices of mineral water, soft drinks and various types of fruit juices were generally stable.
The report's shows a drop of 0.21% in the prices of foodstuffs during the second week of Ramadan compared to the week preceding Ramadan. This resulted from a fall in the prices of various items by different percentages, e.g. the prices of fish and seafood declined by 5.31%, fruits by 1.31%, pulses by 0.40%, and coffee, tea and cocoa by 0.42%.
Meanwhile there was a surge over the same period in the prices of some other consumer goods, including a rise in the prices of bread and cereals by 1.34%, meat by 0.03%, milk, cheese and eggs by 0.33%, oils and fat by 1.64% sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 1.28%, mineral water, soft drinks and fruit juices of various types by 0.35% and other food products by 1.22%.
Analysis of the report findings also indicated a fall of 0.41% in food prices during the second week of Ramadan, compared to the price levels of last July. This was caused by lower prices of some items within various sub-groups as follows: The price of fish and seafood retreated 0.09%, bread and cereals 7.66%, meat 0.06%, milk, cheese and eggs 1.28%, fruits 13.60%, coffee, tea, cocoa, 0.96%, while other food items declined by 8.59%.
In the meantime the prices of oils and fats went up by 1.19%, pulses by 14.99%, sugar, jam, honey, chocolate and confectionery by 15.57%, mineral water, soft drinks and different types of fruit juices by 1.05%.
