India supports Tajikistan in fighting terrorism, extremism
DUSHANBE, September 7 (Itar-Tass) -- India and Tajikistan see the need
to strengthen security in the region, and India is determined to support
the Tajik government's efforts in the fight against terrorism and
extremism, Pratibha Patil, the President of India, stated on Monday
following the Indian-Tajik talks at the summit level at the joint news
conference with Emomali Rakhmon. The Indian president arrived in Dushanbe
on Sunday evening on a three-day official visit.
Pratibha Patil said the spread of intolerance and hate in the region
threatens the whole world and is the most dangerous phenomenon since the
Cold War. She urged the Central Asian governments to take measures to
crush terrorism in all its manifestations. Pratibha Patil promised to
Tajikistan to continue rendering assistance, also in training military
specialists in Indian educational establishments.
The Indian president assessed positively the level of bilateral
relations between the two countries, declaring for the broadening and
deepening of cooperation in the commercial, economic, humanitarian, and
military-technical areas. Pratibha Patil also stated that she invited her
Tajik counterpart to visit India and received the positive answer.
Tajikistan's President Emomali Rakhmon is pleased with the level of
the talks, too. He noted that the trade turnover between the two friendly
states increased considerably in the recent years, exceeding 25 million
dollars for seven months of the current year. "There exist reserves, there
are potentials further to expand our cooperation," the Tajik leader said.
He also stressed that questions of regional security, of the fight against
terrorism were discussed during the conversation and noted that India and
Tajikistan have the same stand on these problems.
The presidents of India and Tajikistan intend to participate in the
Tajik-Indian business forum in the afternoon in the governmental summer
residence Pugus in the picturesque Varzob gorge some 30 kilometres from
Dushanbe.
