Abu Dhabi Crown Prince underscores deep bilateral ties in Meetings with Senior US Government Officials
Washington - Sept 8, 2009 (WAM) - HH Gen. Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, is in Washington, D.C. this week, where he will meet with senior US government officials. Underscoring the importance of the UAE-US bilateral relationship, the Crown Prince will meet with US President Barak Obama and key senior White House advisers, numerous cabinet secretaries, and Congressional leaders.
Joining him in these meetings will be UAE Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdulla bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who is accompanying the Crown Prince on this visit, and UAE Ambassador to the United States HE Yousef Al Otaiba.
Yesterday, the Crown Prince met with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, Secretary of Energy Steven Chu, National Security Advisor Gen. Jim Jones and Members of Congress.
During his meeting with Secretary Clinton, the Crown Prince reaffirmed the UAE's strong commitment to stabilisation initiatives in Afghanistan and Pakistan, a just and peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and multilateral efforts toward improving stability in the region. He also applauded the Obama administration's strong endorsement of the US-UAE Bilateral Agreement for Peaceful Nuclear Cooperation, calling the agreement a powerful boost to international non-proliferation efforts and a model for the development of civilian nuclear energy programs.
Sheikh Mohammed also discussed the importance of the bilateral nuclear agreement in a separate meeting with Secretary Chu, where he reaffirmed the UAE's commitment to government-to-government cooperation on renewable energy and climate change.
In the course of his meeting with Secretary Geithner, the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince confirmed the UAE's full confidence in the US economy, pointing to recent investments UAE companies have made in US businesses, and highlighting that the UAE remains an important market for US exports. In 2008, the UAE was the biggest export market for US goods in the Arab World.
The Crown Prince and the Foreign Minister also met with Gen. Jim Jones, the President's top security advisor, and discussed ongoing security cooperation in the Gulf region.
