Moldova parliament to resume work in full

CHISINAU, September 10 (Itar-Tass) - The Moldovan parliament resumes
its work in full on Thursday. Deputies from the coalition Alliance for
European Integration (AEI) and the Communist Party continued joint
sittings, subordinating to a ruling by the Constitutional Court which
recognised last Tuesday as legitimate the election of new speaker Mihai
Ghimpu.
Parliamentary commissions are expected to be formed. Five of them
(proportionate to the number of seats) will be headed by AEI
representatives and four - by Communists, now in opposition. It is planned
to elect two vice-speakers, one of whom is supposed to be a Communist.
Despite the fact that deputies recognised the court's ruling, their
differences persist. The Communists stated on Wednesday that they will
turn down a vice-speaker's post and will not vote for a president,
nominated by the coalition. "While electing Ghimpu, the coalition ignored
the opinion of 48 deputies of our faction, and we don't see a possibility
of electing a president, nominated by the coalition," explained Communist
Vladimir Tsurkan.
If the head of state is not elected after two attempts, the country
will face new early elections, the responsibility for which Communists put
on their opponents.
Despite this statement, Alliance leaders already stated that they
would not offer Communists posts in the future government. Ghimpu will
take over presidential powers late this week, which will be given up by
Communist leader Vladimir Voronin who completed the second and last term
of office.
On taking them, Ghimpu will offer the premiership to leader of the
Liberal-Democratic Party Vlad Filat. The coalition plans to nominate
leader of the Democratic Party Marian Lupu to the presidency.
To elect the head of state, the alliance needs 61 votes, but it has
only 53. Therefore, it is necessary to come to agreement with the
Communists. Experts believe that taking into account the irreconcilable
stands of the sides, new elections which may be staged only next year
under the law, are inevitable.
