Memorial to Halhin Gol heroes unveiled in Chita

CHITA, September 24 (Itar-Tass) - A memorial to heroes of the Battle
of Halhin Gol was unveiled in Chita on Thursday. More than 23,000 people,
including veterans of the 1939 military operations against the Japanese
militarists, representatives of the clergy, Cossacks, schoolchildren,
students and delegations from Mongolia and the Chinese autonomous district
of Inner Mongolia attended the memorial inauguration ceremony.
The memorial was reconstructed at the request of war veterans to mark
the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Halhin Gol. The memorial was mounted
on the site of the former monument to Halhin Gol servicemen in the Old
cemetery in Chita.
Funds for the memorial reconstruction were raised at the expense of
voluntary contributions made by residents of the Baikal region; around 2.
5 millions roubles were contributed by the municipal administration of
Hulunbuir- a Chinese city in Inner Mongolia and a twin city of Chita,
the press service of the Baikal administration said.
The Bishop of Chita and the Baikal region Yevstafy delivered a
remembrance service for the war heroes in a chapel situated on the
memorial premises. There are 588 names of heroes from the Baikal region
engraved on marble plaques of the memorial.
In summer, 1939 Japanese troops repeatedly invaded the territory of
Mongolia, crossing the Halhin Gol River. Fighting began after Japan had
demanded to recognize the Halhin Gol River as a borderline, while the old
border was 20-25 kilometers east of the river.
A group of troops of the Soviet Union, Mongolia's ally under the
former treaty, fought against the Japanese military. On July 5, 1939 the
Japanese army was ousted from its position on the west bank. The Soviet
Army headquarters under command of Soviet army field commander Georgy
Zhukov adopted a plan of offensive that was launched on August 20. In four
days' time they surrounded the Japanese military group. On August 26 the
Soviet- Mongolian troops broke through to the state border. Despite fierce
resistance the vanguard group of the Japanese troops had been defeated by
August 31. At Japan's request military operations were ceased on
September 16.
More than 17,000 participants in Haling Gol fighting were given
high state awards, including 70 servicemen awarded the Hero of the Soviet
Union awards for valor and courage displayed in Halhin Gol battlefields.
