State panel to name final makeup of ISS-21 crew Tue.
BAIKONUR, Kazakhstan, September 29 (Itar-Tass) - Here on Tuesday, the State Commission is to deliver a final verdict concerning a make-up of crew, who will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) aboard a Soyuz spaceship that will blast off from Baikonur on September 30.
One of the Commission members has told Itar-Tass, "If nothing
unforeseen happens, Russian cosmonaut Maxim Surayev, NASA astronaut
Geoffrey Williams, and Guy Laliberte, a non-professional participant in
the space flight, will take seats in the Soyuz-TMA-16 spaceship on
Wednesday". Surayev and Williams are to work in orbit for six months and
the space tourist goes to theISS for an 11-day visiting expedition.
At the beginning of September, the inter-agency commission estimated
as "excellent" the results of the qualifying exam taken by the main crew
of the 21st long-duration expedition and their backup pilots -- Alexander
Skvortsov and Shannon Walker. Space tourists -- Laliberte and Barbara
Barrett -- also demonstrated good skills in handling the mockups of the
Soyuz spaceship and the Russian segment of the ISS.
The space tourist is to return to Earth aboard the Soyuz TMA-14
together witht he ISS-20 crew -- Gennady Padalka and Michael Barratt, who
have been working in orbit since the end of March.

MOSCOW, September 29 (Itar-Tass) - Motor traffic on the the
Novorizhskoye Road in the Moscow Region, where a gas pipeline burst late
on Monday night, has been partially restored.
A source at the region's State traffic inspectorate has told
Itar-Tass, "Traffic resumed in the direction of the region and that to
Moscow remains closed so far. Firemen, rescuers and representatives of the
Mosoblgas regional gas supply organisation are still at work at the scene
of the incident". At the same time he said there are no traffic jams.
An official at the regional department of the Russian Ministry for
Emergencies (RME) has told Itar-Tass that rescuers are now busy cooling
the pipe section that was on fire. Preliminary information has it that the
supply of gas to users has not been disrupted.
According to RME data, the incident occurred at the 27th kilometre of
the Novorizhskoye Road at 22:45 on Monday. "The driver of a VAZ car failed
to cope with controls, swerved off the roadside and rammed into the gas
pipeline's cutoff valve, after which gas ignited," the RME official said.
The car driver died in the incident.
.Integration of Compatriots forum to open in Svetlogorsk.
KALININGRAD, September 29 (Itar-Tass) - An Integration of Compatriots
international informational forum opens in the resort town of Svetlogorsk
on the coast of the Baltic Sea on Tuesday.
Participants in the two-day forum are to review the implementation of
the State programme for assistance to a voluntary relocation of
compatriots from abroad to the Russian Federation (RF), problems that
arise along the road, and measures to resolve them.
In the estimate of MaximTravnikov, RF Deputy Minister of Regional
Development, who visited the area earlier, "It is precisely the
Kaliningrad Region that is most attractive to participants in the
relocation programme".
Together with the family members, the number of those who wish to
move to Russia's westernmost region from neighbouring and faroff foreign
countries is more than 12,000.
Officials of RF ministries, and the Department for Compatriots'
Affairs of the Federal Migration Service will take part in the forum.
.Medvedev goes to Belarus for working visit Tuesday.
MOSCOW, September 29 (Itar-Tass) - Dmitry Medvedev travels to Belarus
on Tuesday for a working visit. The President of the Russian Federation
(RF) and President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus are to attend the
concluding phase of the Zapad (west)-2009 operational strategic exercises,
a Kremlin press service official has told Itar-Tass.
Within the framework of the visit, the Presidents of the two countries
are to hold talks, "during which they intend to discuss matters of current
importance that concern Russia-Belarus cooperation," the press service
official pointed out.
Plans for visiting Belarus soon were announced by the President of the
RF during his recent visit to the United States. A meeting with
Lukashenko, Medvedev said, is essential for finding solutions to the
existing problems between the two allied countries.
Tuesday is the concluding day of the Zapad-2009 exercises (from
September 8 to 29). They have been held under the common supervision of
the Chief of the General Staff of the RF Armed Forces, and the Defence
Minister of Belarus.
During the exercises troops drill organisation matters and tasks aimed
at using troops of the regional grouping to localise and eliminate armed
conflicts, the aftermath of natural calamities and industrial accidents.
The exercises are involving about 12,500 servicemen, up to 40
aircraft, and about 200 combat vehicles.
