Moldovan parliament to set up commission for electing President.

CHISINAU, October 7 (Itar-Tass) - Moldova's parliament meets in
session later Wednesday to form a commission for electing the next
president and to appoint the election date.
Under the national Constitution, the national President is elected by
the MPs.
The leader of the Democratic Party, Marian Lupu whom the ruling
four-partite Alliance for European Integration has nominated for the
presidential office, said the election is likely to be held October 23 or
October 26.
Under the Constitution, a new president is elected within two months
after the previous president resigns.
Vladimir Voronin, the leader of the Communist Party who occupied the
post for the past eight years, resigned September 11.
This means that the election is to take place before November 11.
The trick of the situation is that the Alliance for European
Integration, some of the constituent parties of which advocate unification
with the ethnically related neighboring Romania, needs 61 votes to obtain
endorsement of the candidate it needs, while the actual number of seats it
has in the unicameral national parliament is only 53.
In the light of it, the alliance leaders hope to win support of eight
Communist MPs as a minimum. They claim that a number of Communists in
parliament do not want an early parliamentary election that will become
inevitable if the MPs fail to elect the next president at two attempts.
If the latter situation becomes a reality, Acting President Mihai
Gimpu will have to dissolve parliament and to appoint the date of a new
parliamentary election, which may take place next year at the earliest.
