Dubai Police keen on stronger partnership with UN human rights body: Tamim
Dubai, Oct 10, 2009 (WAM) - Dubai Police Commander Lt. General Dhahi Khalfan Tamim expressed Dubai Police's interest in further promoting partnership and cooperation with the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights (UNHCHR).
Tamim made his remarks as he received Githu Muigai, the rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance, who is on a current visit to the UAE.
The meeting in Dubai discussed the tasks of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) which represents the world's commitment to universal ideals of human dignity. We have a unique mandate from the international community to promote and protect all human rights.
Muigai was also briefed on Dubai Police's efforts to promote education on human rights in order to pre-empt any activities that might lead to racism, racial discrimination as well as recommendations on certain local measures that could be taken locally, regionally and internationally to achieve the same.
In February 2005, Dubai Police and UNICEF signed an agreement aimed at stopping the transmission of HIV (AIDS) from mothers to children and urge the region's governments to intensify their prevention efforts, educating the community about perils of the disease. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
