UAE motivating the international community to exert more effort on fighting terrorism

New York - Oct 10, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE has urged the international community to exert more effort to fight terrorism by studying its origins and addressing its diverse causes and dimensions.
''During the past two decades, the world witnessed a significantly growth in the nature of organizations sponsoring the phenomenon of terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, H.E. Ambassador Ahmed A. Al-Jarman, the Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations, told the UN General Assembly's sixth committee on legal questions.
The committee met yesterday to review measures taken by countries to fight international terrorism.
Al-Jarman noted that all the efforts exerted in this connection focused mainly on the prosecution of the perpetrators and organizers of the networks of these terrorist acts and sources of funding without achieving any significant progress in studying the reasons causing the emergence of such terrorist acts and activities, especially that this type of criminal acts is usually a result of injustice, exclusion, poverty and other unstable situations causing growing sense of hatred, vengeance, destruction and chaos among some irresponsible groups involved in these terrorist acts and activities.
Al Jarman expressed UAE's appreciation to the efforts exerted by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, adding that the greater responsibilities in dealing with this phenomenon is the responsibility of the countries.
He also reiterated the UAE's full commitment to the United Nations global strategy to combat terrorism along with the relevant Action Plan as a concrete and comprehensive plan not only aims to combat acts of terrorism, but also to address the conditions conducive to its spread.
He outlined efforts made by the UAE to cooperate with the international community to fight terrorism. Locally, he said the UAE has enacted legislations to fight terrorism and joined regional and international conventions in this respect.
He called for boosting aid and training programmes offered to developing nations without discrimination to build and develop their capacities for fighting terrorism and support victims of terrorism.
''Multi-lateral cooperation under the UN umbrella within the framework of full respect for international law, UN charter and relevant international conventions is the best effective mechanism to fight terrorism and its root-causes as well as factors of its spread,''he affirmed. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
