Kyrgyzstan imposes temporary ban on Boeing-737-200 jets.
12/10 Tass 201
BISHKEK, October 12 (Itar-Tass) - Authorities in Kyrgyzstan have
imposed a temporary ban on operating the Boeing-737-200 jets, according to
a resolution that was issued Monday by the country's Civil Aviation
Department.
The ban was introduced pending an increase in the cases of engine
failures on these jets.
Official sources indicate at least three cases of faulty operation of
the engines installed on the jets of the Boeing-737-200 family have been
registered of late.
The first two accidents occurred to the jets of Kyrgyzstani airlines
in the skies over the United Arab Emirates and Kazakhstan.
One more accident in the same line was registered October 10 in
Islamabad, Pakistan. The jet's engine failed during takeoff and the
six-strong crew had to take a decision to land.
The jet had 43 passengers aboard.
In August 2008, engine failure during takeoff brought down a
Boeing-737-200 jet of the Kyrgyzstani airline Itek Air en route from
Bishkek to Tehran.
The accident killed 65 passengers and crewmembers of the overall 90
people aboard.
Spokespeople for the civil aviation department said the ban will stay
in effect until there is full clarity on what causes the engine problems.
In the meantime, airline executives have told mass media they plan
filing complaints over the decision, since a ban on one or another type of
jets can be imposed only for a range or reasons specified in the Air
Navigation Code.
