Int'l conference focuses on diversification of Turkmenistan's gas exports.

ASHGABAT, November 18 (Itar-Tass) -- Prospects for developing
Turkmenistan's partnership in the oil and gas sector are in the focus of representatives from about 200 foreign companies of 35 countries who are taking part in the 14th International Scientific Conference entitled "Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan-2009" that opened in Ashgabat on Wednesday.

The forum was organized under the motto "Development of Turkmenistan's
Oil and Gas Industry in the New Renaissance Period and International
Cooperation."
"Successful implementation of social and economic programs, the
country's big resources of hydrocarbons, and the 'open door' policy are
attractive for potential investors and partners of Turkmenistan,"
Turkmenistani Deputy Prime Minister for the Fuel-and-Energy Industry
Baimurad Khdzhamukhammedov said, opening the conference.
Touching upon the key tasks facing the main industry of the
Turkmenistani economy, the country's senior official mentioned the
diversification of the gas markets.
During the conference, representatives of the U.S. State Department,
the Directorate-General for Energy and Transport at the European
Commission and the International Energy Agency voiced readiness to help
the country fulfill that task.
The participants in the forum mainly focused on the prospects for
implementing the Nabucco pipeline project, in which Turkmenistan will be
the main supplier of gas.
The 3,300-kilometre Nabucco gas pipeline is due to connect the
European Union to gas deposits in Central Asia and the Middle East. It is
planned to start the construction of the line between Turkey, Bulgaria,
Romania, Hungary, and Austria in 2010. The project supported by the EU
costs seven billion euros, but it is still unclear whether the pipeline
can be filled.
During the meeting, representatives from the US and European companies
- Chevron, Exxon Mobil, Royal Dutch-Shell, Conoco-Philips, RWE, StatOil
OMV, BP and others - spoke of their plans of cooperation with Turkmenistan.
The conference will continue on Thursday.
