WHO says 12,220 deaths from pandemic influenza

GENEVA, Dec 30 (KUNA) -- The World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday that at least 12,220 people have died as a result of the pandemic influenza H1N1.

WHO, in an update about the fatalities of the virus, said laboratories in mor than 208 countries and overseas territories or communities have reported that at least 12,220 deaths by December 27.
WHO added that it is actively monitoring the progress of the pandemic through frequent consultations with the WHO Regional Offices and member states and through monitoring of multiple sources of data.
According to the WHO, situation update the most active areas of pandemic influenza transmission currently are in central and eastern Europe.
WHO said that a high intensity of respiratory diseases activity with concurrent circulation of pandemic influenza persists in parts of southern and eastern Europe, particularly in Greece, Poland, Bulgaria, Serbia, Ukraine, and the Urals Region of the Russian Federation.
