In Mumbai, Bollywood stars like Bipasha Basu captivated
the audience at a five-star hotel with her dance numbers.
Revellers in this western meetropolis also got a bonus
with public celebrations at hotels and restaurants being
officially allowed till 3 AM IST.
In Bangalore in south India, young men and women poured
in from all corners creating human waves on the well-lit
Brigade Road. Some made a beeline for the numerous watering
holes in the area while others strolled in the shopping
district enjoying the ambience.
Traffic police kept a close watch on drunken driving and
made special arrangements at important locations to ensure
that the night went off without traffic snarls.
In New Delhi, a total of 189 revellers were prosecuted
for driving under the influence of alchohol in a special drive
launched by traffic police.
Policemen, equipped with Alcometers (breath analysers),
were out in large numbers across the city to nab revellers
driving on a 'high'. They were seen stopping persons suspected
to having had a one drink too many and made them breathe into
the equipment.
The festivities were also in full flow in the popular
tourist state of Goa to toast 2010. A tight vigil was
maintained at locations where foreign tourists gathered in
large numbers.
Police also kept a watch on consumption of drugs.
New year's eve festivities also passed of peacefully in
Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad and Chandigarh. PTI TEAM
