"We are discussing with Toshiba and Alstom (for building
atomic reactors)," he said, adding that it would be a
tripartite JV with NPCIL and in the next 2-3 months would
finalise the third partner.
The third technology partner is likely to pick up
minority stake in the proposed JV.
Sources indicated that French firm Alstom is expected to
be technology partner in the JV company and may also hold 26
per cent stake.
BHEL and NPCIL signed an agreement in April 2008 to form
a joint venture for providing engineering, procurement and
construction services in nuclear power sector.
BHEL is focusing on nuclear power generation and is
exploring technology tie-ups for manufacturing turbine and
generator sets.
The current installed capacity of nuclear power in the
country stands at 4,120 MW which the government plans to ramp
up to 20,000 MW by the year 2020.
After the Nuclear Suppliers Group's (NSG) waiver to India
in September, last year for nuclear trade, it has signed Civil
Nuclear Cooperation Agreements with eight countries including
France, Mongolia, Canada, Kazakhstan, Russia and Namibia. PTI
