Commerce Ministry speeds up installing EDC device
BANGKOK, Oct 16 (TNA) -- The Commerce Ministry is coordinating the quick installation of electronic data capture (EDC) machines at Blue Flag discount stores with the Comptroller-General’s Department and Krungthai Bank to serve holders of electronic-welfare cards carrying government subsidies.
Wichien Chavalit, advisor to the deputy commerce minister, said the ministry, the Comptroller-General’s Department and Krungthai Bank would have EDC machines installed at at least one shop in every sub-district and the ministry would deploy mobile shops that accepted welfare cards in remote areas.
Mr Wichien also said e-welfare card holders can buy all kinds of necessary consumer products including fresh food, vegetables, fruits, seasonings, beverages, daily appliances, general medications and local community products except alcoholic beverages, cigarettes and luxury products.
The products were available with 10-20% discounts and the welfare project welcomed product manufacturers of all levels, Mr Wichien said.
He denied reports that the project favored large-scaled operators. The project had involved 24 manufacturers with 318 product items and many more manufacturers were applying to participate, he said. (TNA)
