Govt Urged To Review Law On 'KEK'

Jakarta, Dec 17 (ANTARA) - Indonesia for Global Justice (IGJ) has urged the government and House of Representatives (DPR) to review Law No.39/2009 on the Special Economic Zone (KEK) because this law does not improve the workers` well being. "Through the KEK, the government has offered a lot of facilities to investors, but in reality, the investors have ignored the workers` well being," IGJ spokesman Rachmi Hertanti said in a press statement on Monday. According to him, the result of an IGJ study on the "Working and Living Conditions In Special Economic Zones 2012" indicated that KEK areas, such as the one in Batam, offer lower wages than non-KEK areas. Based on remuneration data for 2012, the minimum wage in Batam is Rp1,402,000 per monthlower than the minimum wage of Rp1,727,940 in Jakartaand Rp1,849,000 per month in the Bekasi district, West Java. Rachmi said Jakarta and Bekasi are non-KEK areas but have higher minimum wages.
