Manama, Feb. 25 (BNA): Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King, President of the Supreme Council for Women (SCW), Chairperson of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector Advisory Board and Honorary President of the Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS) Supreme Organizing Committee visited GPIC pavilion and was received by Company President Dr. Abdulrahman Jawahery and members of the Executive Management.
Her Royal Highness praised GPIC for the several awards it has won in the international arena and expressed admiration for its efforts in the field of environmental care. She noted the Company’s record in the field of safety and commended its outstanding efforts to promote activities and events on environmental awareness to spread a culture of the environment among all segments of society.
In a statement, Dr. Jawahery thanked Her Royal Highness for the visit to the pavilion and said she has always encouraged them to increase green areas and to promote the setting up of gardens. He praised in particular her initiative on the development of agriculture, which aims to raise awareness of educational systems and training as well as support for farmers and their rehabilitation.
Dr. Jawahery said GPIC is proud of its cooperation with Her Royal Highness’ green initiative, which comes in the framework of her ambitious vision to develop green spaces and create an awareness of the importance of the agricultural sector in achieving sustainable development. Dr. Jawahery said the garden show is one of the most important events in the Company's calendar, and it is keen to take part in the event to showcase its products to the public, the importance and methods of use of fertilizers, including urea, which GPIC produces and exports around the world.
The Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company (GPIC) took part in the 12th Bahrain International Garden Show (BIGS2016) as part of the Company's policy to support the environment, encourage the spread of green areas and promote an interest in the agricultural sector.
On the theme, Tree Care, the show is being held from February 25 to 28, in the presence of guests and visitors from within and outside Bahrain. The message going out at the event is to encourage investment in the agricultural sector and to highlight the importance of achieving the sector’s economic growth as well as to increase its contribution to Bahrain’s gross domestic product (GDP).
It also aims to help reduce the food gap and achieve food security in the country. As in previous years, the focus is on agriculture as a strategic goal as well as to translate a growing interest in it to harmonize national efforts to support economic, social and environmental objectives.
Shaikha Maram bint Isa Al Khalifa, Secretary General of the National Initiative for the Development of the Agricultural Sector said over the past few years the show has grown and now is spread over 7,500 square meters. She said this year’s show would particularly look at care of fruit trees, traditionally grown in Bahrain for many centuries and once the main source of food, economic and environmental resources.
She said it would highlight the skills needed to take care of trees, including ways and means of trimming and pruning, structural support, nutrition and pest control, better and safer ways to transport the trees and other skills. She pointed out that the exhibition would feature many new technological innovations and new experiences for the public, which can be used in Bahrain to preserve local varieties and increase their productivity and sustainability.
Dr. Jawahery thanked the show organisers, led by Shaikha Maram for having organised a highly successful event.
