MoEW releases fingerlings into Umm Al-Qaiwain creek

Abu Dhabi, June 3, 2013 (WAM) - The Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) has released the first batch of Hamour, Safi, Subaiti and Sha'am fingerlings (juvenile fish) into the waters of Khour Umm Al-Qaiwain creek. Local fishermen from the emirate took part in the release in cooperation the Umm Al-Qaiwain Municipality. Dr. Ibrahim Al Jamali, Director of the Umm Al-Qaiwain based Marine Environment Research Centre (MERC), an affiliate of the Ministry, said the Ministry is interested in involving all stakeholders, including local departments and fishermen, in the process of identifying the best sites for releasing fingerlings. The release of fingerlings is part of a variety efforts by the Ministry to enhance the country's fish stocks and to create more spawning and nursery areas, he noted. A major proportion of the fingerlings produced at MERC are released at suitable locations along the coastal waters of the UAE, as part of the Ministry's strategy for sustainable development of fisheries and marine resources. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
