Police and phone companies to fight against mobile phone fraud
Almaty, 16 July (Khabar) - Mobile phone operators and the Almaty Police have taken the decision to unite to fight against mobile telephone fraud. According to experts, this is now one of the most frequently happening crimes and is almost impossible to solve. Policemen say even inmates sitting in prison are basically involved in such type of crimes. Recently, law enforcement bodies arrested one more group of fraudsters - their idea-generating centre was situated in the high-security prison in Semei, where, according to Zhandos Suyunbai, machinations were developed with people out of prison fulfilling them.
Zhandos Suyunbai, department chief, Almaty Police:
- They call people on behalf of the Police and ask people to give money in exchange for their son, for example. They ask people to leave money in a post box. As a result we caught two groups of people and sent them to prison.
Senior officials in the Police say it is very difficult to catch such
criminals as the means of fraud are changing all the time and it happens so rarely when police can find the owner of a telephone number registered using forged or stolen documents. In this regard, police advise people to be attentive and to turn to them in the case of any suspicious event connected with mobile fraud. Usually, fraudsters try to deceive people with false stories about their relatives who need help. False lottery games have also become popular now as well as mobile phone thefts .
Pavel Rodin, mobile operator spokesman:
- When a subscriber informs us that his mobile telephone or a SIM card has been stolen, his SIM card is immediately blocked and the money on this card will remain untouched.
It is almost impossible to get back a stolen or a lost mobile telephone. A cell phone can be easily reprogrammed which makes it impossible to find later. Children are also in this group of risk. Mobile operators are now trying to fight this evil, though independent experts say the taken measures bring no real solution to the given problem so far.
