S'pore Eyeing Opportunities In Other M'sian States

ALOR SETAR (Kedah, Malaysia), May 11 (Bernama) -- Singapore that has been focusing its investments in Johor, is also eyeing opportunities elsewhere in Malaysia. Singapore Minister of State for Ministry of Home Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs Masagos Zulkifli Masagos Mohamad said his country had concentrated on Johor, the souhtern state of Malaysia because it was nearer. Now, it had to look at places farther than Johor as well as other fields especially tourism, he told reporters after making a courtesy call to Kedah Menteri Besar Azizan Abdul Razak at Wisma Darulaman here. He said the visit to Perlis and Kedah (both are northern states of Malaysia) today was to scout for investments opportunities. "I see the potential here and other places in Malaysia is very big. I will also go to other states in Malaysia in this one or two years to find investment opportunities," he said. He said it would be just an exploratory visit at this stage. Meanwhile, Azizan said several matters had been agreed upon during his discussion with the Singapore minister, particularly on agriculture and other business sectors such as industrial and tourism. "In Kedah, we have three industrial centres, namely in Sungai Petani, Kulim and Gurun. "They are also keen to visit the Kulim Hi-Tech Park. There, we have about 500 hectares and it can be used for manufacturing purposes if they are interested," he said. In tourism, he said that besides Langkawi island, the state would give emphasis on the mainland and was implementing mega projects including the construction of hotels and shopping centres. "For the agricultural sector, the state government was willing to provide space if parties from Singapore have capital, technology and market. This will give job opportunities to Kedah people," he said. -- BERNAMA
