National Carbon Disclosure Programme Being Developed

KUALA LUMPUR, July 11 (Bernama) -- As part of Malaysia's green efforts, the natural resources and environment ministry, with the assistance of the United Nations Development Programme, has begun conducting a study to develop a National Carbon Disclosure Programme (NCDP). The minister, Douglas Uggah, said the NCDP would establish a national reporting standard that would help companies to prepare corporate greenhouse gas inventories that represent an accurate account of their emissions. "This will facilitate consistency and transparency in GHG (greenhouse gas) accounting and reporting; simplify and reduce costs preparation and compilation," he said at the launching of the Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award 2012/2013 here Tuesday. His text of speech was read by the ministry's deputy secretary-general (environment), Dr Che Abdul Rahim Nik. Uggah said the NCDP was aimed at encouraging participating organisations to set emission reduction targets and develop effective emission reduction action plans. The programme allows achievement to be measured and prepares Malaysia for further carbon emission reductions in the future, he added. On the Prime Minister's Hibiscus Award, Uggah hoped it would galvanise business and industry in Malaysia to incorporate environmental best practices and green technology in its policy-mix. -- BERNAMA
