Perak Fisheries Dept Seeks Donors For Turtle Conservation

LUMUT (Perak, Malaysia), July 12 (Bernama) -- The northern state of Perak Fisheries Department on Wednesday appealed for donations from NGOs and companies for conservation of two turtle species facing extinction. Its director, Sani Mohd Isa, said their funding would be of great help to the Segari Turtle Conservation and Information Centre here to conserve the Olive Ridley and Hawksbill turtles. The allocations from the federal and state governments were insufficient for the centre to undertake the exercise, he said. "If there is additional allocation from NGOs and companies, the centre will be able to improve facilities for visitors. The centre receives many visitors throughout the year, even from abroad," he told reporters after the launch of a turtle awareness programme by Malakoff Corporation Berhad at the centre. Malakoff donated RM10,000 to the centre, RM5,000 to storm-hit villages of Kampung Segari and RM16,400 for a sports carnival in Kampung Segari. (US$1=RM3.18) -- BERNAMA
