Works Ministry To Act Against Individuals Causing Damage To Roads
KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia), June 13 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry
will take action against individuals who cause serious damage to roads.
Referring to the Penampang-Tambunan road, near here, which collapsed late
last month, its minister Fadillah Yusof said he would obtain the views of the
ministry's legal adviser and the Attorney-General's Chambers on action that
could be taken against those responsible.
"If legal action can be taken for the government to seek compensation to
repair or rebuild the damaged roads, I will sternly act on this.
"This is part of the education process. It's not so much to punish but to
teach people to have good practices in life so as not to cause inconvenience or
danger to others," he said after a visit to the Penampang-Tambunan road,
Thursday.
Fadillah said the investigation into the collapsed section of the road would
take one month.
He did not dismiss the possibility of development activities by individuals
or a company that had caused damage to the road.
"I wish to warn people, especially those carrying out development to abide
by all the relevant laws and regulations.
"We have a social responsibility. If we have land, it does not mean we
should work the land for development if it's going to adversely affect others,"
he said.
Earlier, Fadillah visited the Pan Borneo road upgrading project and was
satisfied with the progress so far.
The state of Sabah is located on the northern portion of the island of
Borneo.
