Preparation for population census in Kazakhstan

Astana, 17 February 2009, (Khabar) - Preparations for the forth-coming population census were the topic of discussion at today’s government conference in Astana. In compliance with preliminary data announced by the Republican Statistical agency, the current population in Kazakhstan is over 15.7 million people. The campaign which is scheduled to take place between the 25th of February and the 6th of March and entitled “everyone matters” will allow specialists to collect more specific data. Presently, all the people who are to be involved in the census are being trained as a total of 58 thousand counters are set to be operating around the Republic. Each of them will be wearing a special uniform including a briefcase, a scarf with the census logo and an ID card. Also, some census points will be in operation at railway stations, airports, sanatoria, hotels and customs offices. The heads of different ministries and bodies reported their readiness at the government conference.

Karim Massimov, Prime Minister of Kazakhstan:
- It is a very important event. It happens once in ten years which is why we need to carry it out thoroughly. There are a few days to go and I ask Mister Shukeyev to carry on doing all the preparatory work. We will have another conference devoted to this topic on the 25th of February.
